_Principal Message           THIS IS HOLY GROUND

Picture
Welcome to the holy ground of Holy Spirit School. Please come and learn about us through our website and/or a visit to the school.  It is a special place where children laugh, cry, play, learn, give, grow and pray. Our staff is dedicated to finding the best ways to teach each child in a loving community of faith.

'This is Holy Ground' is our theme for the 2012-13 school year and it also is a description of what Holy Spirit School is.  Ground, that is holy, is holy because God is present. I think most of us would think of the church as a place where we would find God- in the Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist, the prayer.  But such places as school, home, work place and even vacation spots are holy, too, because God is present in each one of us. What we hope is that everyone in the Holy Spirit community will become aware of this Presence and show the God-inspired respect and love to each person.  It is a beautiful thought and we will return to it often during the school year.

I feel privileged to be the principal of Holy Spirit: it is a kind of homecoming for me.  Most recently I've enjoyed being a substitute teacher in a few schools, often at Holy Spirit.  For many years I was a principal at two Catholic schools, one in San Jose and the other in San Mateo. I started my teaching career in the Oakland Diocese at St. Joachim School.  I have lived in Union City in one house or another during that entire career. I am a widower with two grown sons, one married who became a Catholic school teacher!! Yes, Holy Spirit School is like coming home. Home means community; community breeds respect.  Respect results in all kinds of good things.

Benjamin Franklin expresses the meaning 'This is Holy Ground' in a beautiful, but practical way:
"The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.”

May God Bless You All,

Kenneth Boegel
